Dressing your baby for winter: keeping little ones comfortable as temperatures drop

Dressing your baby for winter: keeping little ones comfortable as temperatures drop

There's a familiar routine when the colder weather arrives. You're getting ready to leave the house, your baby is finally dressed, and just as you've managed the last popper, it's time for another nappy change.

Winter dressing brings a few extra things to think about, particularly with babies who can't yet tell you when they're too warm or too cold.

Thankfully, keeping them comfortable doesn't mean buying an entirely new wardrobe. A few well-chosen layers and soft, practical fabrics can make winter outings much easier.

Start with comfortable layers

Layering is one of the simplest ways to manage changing temperatures.

A soft cotton bodysuit makes a comfortable starting point, followed by a sleepsuit or everyday outfit. When you're heading outside, you can add another layer suited to the weather.

The advantage is flexibility. A chilly morning walk might call for something warmer, but once you're inside a heated café or shop, it's easy to remove an outer layer.

Babies can overheat as well as get cold, so it's worth adjusting what they're wearing as their surroundings change.

Think about the fabric, not just the thickness

It's tempting to choose the thickest, fluffiest outfit you can find when the temperature drops. But comfort matters just as much as warmth.

Soft, breathable fabrics are useful for the layers worn closest to your baby's skin. Clothes should allow little arms and legs to move freely, especially as babies begin rolling, crawling and exploring.

Our Mini Cuddles collections are designed with everyday comfort in mind.

Cosy Cotswolds brings warm seasonal colours and countryside-inspired styling to colder-weather wardrobes.

If you've got an active little one, Preppy Puppy is worth a look: brushed fleece and cotton interlock, sporty rugby stripes and playful puppy appliqués, cut into relaxed shapes that give them room to move.

For something gentler, Meadow Moo keeps things simple with calming neutrals and countryside-inspired prints, in easy-to-mix-and-match unisex pieces.

Teddy fleece and soft rib make Puppy Park the pick for slower autumn strolls and cosy cuddles, with shapes that leave plenty of room to move. Rosy reds, sky blues and puppy prints with little bows round it off.

The best winter wardrobe is one that works for your family, whether that means nursery mornings, long pram walks or cosy days at home.

Don't forget how quickly temperatures change

A baby dressed for a cold outdoor walk may be wearing too many layers once you're back indoors.

Remove outdoor hats and extra layers when you come inside, and check your baby's temperature by feeling their chest or the back of their neck rather than relying on cool hands or feet.

Car journeys need a little extra thought too. Bulky coats and padded pramsuits shouldn't be worn beneath a car-seat harness, as the padding can prevent it from fitting snugly. Use suitable thinner layers and follow your car-seat manufacturer's guidance for keeping your baby warm.

It's one of those small things worth knowing before you're halfway through getting everyone out of the door.

Choose clothes that make everyday life easier

Winter already involves more dressing and undressing, so practical details are especially welcome.

Look for comfortable fits that leave room for movement and fastenings that make nappy changes simpler. On selected Mini Cuddles styles, features such as fold-over cuffs and adjustable waistbands can also help clothes accommodate a little more growth.

Mix-and-match pieces are useful too. When tops, trousers and layers work together, you can put together another outfit without too much thought, even after a night of broken sleep.

There's no need for a completely different outfit for every winter outing. Clothes that wash easily and work together tend to be the ones parents reach for most.
