Packing for your baby’s first holiday. What you actually need.

Packing for your baby’s first holiday. What you actually need.

There’s a point before your first trip with a baby when packing starts to feel like a lot.

Do they need five outfits a day? What if the weather changes? What if they’re sick on everything before you’ve even left the airport?

The truth is, you don’t need loads. You just need the right things.

Soft, practical pieces that are easy to put on, easy to change, and comfortable enough for naps in the pram, feeds on the go, and everything else that comes with travelling with a little one.

Start with the basics

A few well-chosen essentials will take you much further than a suitcase full of “just in case”.

Pack a small number of outfits you know you’ll actually use. Bodysuits, sleepsuits, soft leggings or joggers, and a couple of light layers usually cover most situations.

The key is choosing pieces that are easy to mix, match and re-wear. Babies don’t need a different outfit for every photo. They need clothes that feel good, wash well, and make your life easier when you’re away from home.

Think about the journey, not just the destination

Travel days are rarely smooth from start to finish. Even when everything goes to plan, you’re still dressing, feeding, changing and carrying a baby in places that were clearly designed by people who have never travelled with one.

That’s why travel-day outfits need to work harder.

Go for soft bodysuits, sleepsuits or all-in-ones that are easy to move in and quick to change. Pack at least one spare outfit in your hand luggage. Two if you want peace of mind. Add muslins, because somehow you always need more than you think.

If it’s fiddly, stiff or awkward to fasten at home, it won’t suddenly become a joy to deal with in an airport toilet.

Dress for changing weather

Even warm holidays can start with chilly mornings, breezy evenings or over-air-conditioned cafés. And if you’re staying in the UK, obviously the weather will do whatever it likes.

Layers are what make baby packing feel manageable.

A lightweight cardigan or jumper, soft joggers or leggings, and a simple extra layer for cooler moments usually do the job without overfilling your case. You don’t need to pack for every possible forecast. You just need a few pieces that work together.

That’s often the difference between overpacking and packing well.

Keep sleep as familiar as you can

Holidays are lovely. They are not always relaxing when you’ve got a baby who suddenly decides sleep is optional.

A few familiar sleep pieces can help make evenings feel a bit more settled. Sleepsuits they already wear at home are a good place to start. A sleeping bag can also be helpful if your baby usually sleeps in one, especially when you want to keep bedtime as consistent as possible in a new space.

It doesn’t need to be perfect. It just helps when some things still feel familiar.

Don’t overpack the “nice” clothes

This is where people get carried away.

You imagine beach dinners, cute family photos, one perfect outfit for every occasion. Then your baby spends most of the holiday in the same two soft favourites because they’re comfortable and easy.

That’s normal.

You’ll usually get more use out of practical everyday pieces than anything too dressy. Soft fabrics, easy fastenings and outfits that can handle dribbles, spills and naps will always earn their place in the case.

The prettiest outfit is the one that still works when your baby is tired, wriggly and halfway through a feed.

Fabric matters more when you’re away

When you’re travelling, babies often spend longer in the same clothes. You’re out more, routines shift, and there’s usually more heat, more movement and more chance of discomfort if something doesn’t feel right.

That’s why breathable, supersoft fabrics matter.

Clothes that feel gentle on delicate skin and move comfortably with your baby make a real difference, especially when you’re away from your usual setup. It’s one less thing to think about, which frankly is quite enough of a win.

At Mini Cuddles, we design babywear to feel good in real life. Soft fabrics, thoughtful details, and easy-to-wear pieces that help take the pressure off when you’re packing for the unknown.

Less really is more

You do not need a huge holiday wardrobe for your baby.

You need a few pieces you trust. The ones that wash well, feel soft, layer easily, and make changes quicker when you’re out and about. The ones you reach for again and again because they just work.

That’s what makes packing simpler. Not more stuff. Better choices.
